What Is ASTM A234 / ASME SA234?

ASTM A234 / ASME SA234 is the governing specification for wrought carbon steel and alloy steel butt-welding pipe fittings used in pressure piping at moderate to elevated temperatures. It covers fittings of both seamless and welded construction, manufactured to the dimensional requirements of ASME B16.9 (factory-made wrought fittings), ASME B16.28 (short-radius elbows and returns), MSS SP-79, and related standards. The specification applies to elbows, tees, reducers, caps, stub ends, and similar pressure-containing components that form permanent butt-welded joints in a piping system.

Unlike cast fittings, A234 products originate from wrought stock — pipe, plate, or bar — that retains a refined grain structure from the working process. This gives the finished fitting predictable, consistent mechanical properties throughout its cross-section. The specification does not cover cast welding fittings or fittings machined directly from castings.

Among the grades within A234, Grade WPB is the most widely used carbon steel designation, accounting for the vast majority of butt-weld fittings in general industrial, utility, and infrastructure piping worldwide.

Grade WPB – Technical Overview

Applicable Temperature Range

ASTM A234 WPB is suited for continuous service from approximately –29°C (–20°F) to 427°C (800°F). Below –29°C, low-temperature grades such as A420 WPL6 are typically specified due to their mandatory Charpy V-notch impact testing at sub-zero temperatures. Above 427°C, creep and oxidation considerations shift selection toward Cr-Mo alloy grades such as WP11 or WP22.

Hot-Dip Galvanizing – ASTM A153 Coating Specification

For the product covered here, the WPB fitting substrate is hot-dip galvanized in compliance with ASTM A153 / A153M, the standard specification for zinc coatings applied by the hot-dip process on iron and steel hardware.

The Galvanizing Process

Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing thoroughly cleaned steel fittings in a bath of molten zinc (≥ 98% Zn purity per ASTM B6 or B960) at approximately 450°C. During immersion, a metallurgical reaction between iron in the steel surface and the molten zinc produces a series of Zn–Fe intermetallic alloy layers, topped by a layer of near-pure zinc. This structure provides both barrier protection (the zinc layer itself) and cathodic (sacrificial) protection, meaning the zinc preferentially corrodes to protect any exposed steel at cut edges or minor surface breaks.

After withdrawal from the bath, excess zinc is removed by centrifuging or spinning to prevent heavy drip formations, ensuring dimensional tolerances on bore and end dimensions are maintained for butt-welding fit-up.

ASTM A153 Coating Weight / Thickness Requirements

ASTM A153 classifies hardware into categories based on material thickness. For rolled, pressed, and forged articles (including pipe fittings), the applicable class is typically Class B:

ASTM A153 ClassMaterial CategoryMin. Avg. Coating WeightMin. Avg. Coating Thickness
Class B-1Rolled, pressed, forged articles ≥ 3/16 in (4.76 mm) thick2.0 oz/ft² (610 g/m²)~85 µm
Class B-2Rolled, pressed, forged articles < 3/16 in (4.76 mm) thick1.3 oz/ft² (397 g/m²)~55 µm
Class CCastings1.0 oz/ft² (305 g/m²)~43 µm
Class DFasteners and similar threaded hardware0.25 oz/ft² (76 g/m²)~11 µm

For the forged fittings described here (wall thickness in the range of 5.49–6.02 mm), Class B-2 applies as a minimum, with Class B-1 typically achieved on thicker-walled pieces.

Coating Appearance and Acceptance Criteria

  • The coating shall be continuous, smooth, and reasonably uniform in thickness across the fitting surface.
  • Free from uncoated areas, blisters, heavy flux deposits, dross inclusions, and zinc runs or drips that would interfere with the intended use.
  • Minor surface roughness arising from the metallurgical reaction is acceptable and does not constitute a defect.
  • Coating thickness is verified by magnetic-field or eddy-current instruments per ASTM E376, or by gravimetric methods per ASTM A90/A90M.

Manufacturing, Heat Treatment, and Welded Construction Notes

ASTM A234 fittings may be manufactured from seamless pipe/tube or from welded pipe/plate. Seamless (SMLS) construction is preferred for higher-pressure classes and is standard in the product line described here, as it eliminates any longitudinal weld seam and the associated HAZ (heat-affected zone) considerations.

Hot-formed fittings where the final forming operation is completed at a temperature above 620°C (1,150°F) and below 980°C (1,800°F) and then cooled in still air are generally considered as-normalized and do not require a separate post-forming heat treatment. Cold-formed fittings, and any fittings that undergo welding in manufacture, require post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 595–675°C (1,100–1,250°F) followed by radiographic examination of the weld seams.

All fittings shall be free from injurious surface conditions such as laps, cracks, dents, or heavy scale that reduce the strength or serviceability of the piece.

  • Heat number
  • Nominal pipe size and schedule / wall thickness
  • Manufacturer’s identification mark

About C&N – Hongcheng Pipe Fittings Limited

At C&N (Hongcheng Pipe Fittings Limited), the ASTM A234 WPB galvanized fittings we ship aren’t a side item — they’re part of the product lines we’ve been building and refining over years of actual project work. When we source or produce WPB seamless fittings for hot-dip galvanizing, the process starts at the material stage: mill certificates are checked for chemistry and mechanical compliance before any piece goes into the galvanizing bath, not after.

Our galvanizing is done to ASTM A153 and verified by coating thickness measurement with calibrated magnetic gauges. Every shipment comes with documentation that covers the complete chain: MTR from the fitting manufacturer, galvanizing records, dimensional inspection report, and where requested, a third-party inspection certificate from SGS, Bureau Veritas, or your nominated TPI body.

On the packaging side, galvanized fittings are susceptible to coating damage in transit if not properly handled. We pack in sturdy wooden crates or on pallets with internal blocking and separation to prevent pieces from rubbing against each other. End protectors and plastic sleeves are used on bevel ends where specified, and each crate is clearly labeled with item number, tag, NPS, schedule, material, and gross/net weight for straightforward receiving at site or warehouse.

We handle EXW, FOB, CFR, and CIF shipments and regularly consolidate fittings, flanges, and other piping components into single containers to keep freight costs manageable on multi-line orders. Documentation packages — commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and customs HS coding support — are prepared as standard, not on request.

If you’re working on a project that calls for ASTM A234 WPB SMLS hot-dip galvanized fittings, or need technical clarification before placing an inquiry, we’re straightforward to reach.
