About ASTM A333 Gr.6 Low-Temperature SMLS Pipe

ASTM A333 Grade 6 Low Alloy Steel Seamless Pipe is designed for low-temperature service where the minimum design temperature is -45°C [-50°F] and notch toughness is required. They are normally supplied in nominal pipe sizes (NPS) and nominal wall thicknesses with schedule numbers in accordance with ASME B36.10M. They are often joined with flanges to ASTM A350 LF2 and butt-weld pipe fittings to ASTM A420 WPL6. Seamless tubes to ASTM A333 Gr.6 are mainly used in the construction of pipelines for the production of ethylene, propylene, urea, ammonia and N-P-K compound fertilisers. They can be used in scrubbing, cleaning, desulphurisation and degreasing processes in the oil and gas, petrochemical, coal and pharmaceutical industries. They can also be used in the manufacture of cryogenic equipment and cold stores.

For each reduction of 0.01% carbon below 0.30%, an increase of 0.05% manganese above 1.06% would be permitted to maximum of 1.35% manganese.

In terms of influence on low temperature impact toughness, phosphorus (P) is the most detrimental element among C, Si, P, Si and N for Charpy toughness of ASTM A333 Gr.6. Its amount should be reduced to the minimum. Manganese, as well as the addition of small traces of nickel, vanadium, copper and niobium, can significantly reduce the critical brittle-ductile transition temperature and refine the grain, thereby improving impact toughness.

Part of our product testing process

The ASTM A333 Gr.6 seamless pipe can be normalized by heating the pipe to a uniform temperature of no less than 1500°F [815°C] and cool in air. Or it can be heat treated by heating the pipe to a uniform temperature of no less than 1500°F [815°C], followed by quenching in liquid and reheating to a suitable tempering temperature.
