What is a Pipe Spool?

Pipe spool refers to a part of a piping system that is prefabricated into smaller sections with flanges and fittings. Pipe spools are often prone to corrosion due to their exposure to the elements, water and other natural electrolytes.

Pipe spool fabrication

Pipe spools are manufactured using various types of virgin pipe and fittings, which include flanges, elbows, tees, and more. They are usually fabricated on site. The original pipe is pre-cut to a specific size and cut with fittings and other components. They are temporarily fitted together. This partially completed sub-assembly is then welded to the other spool assemblies.

Prefabrication of pipe spools

The roll alignment and welding process refers to the assembly of the main pipe with a roll machine, where the welder does not need to change his position, and is also the position of the assembly and welding that occurs when multiple branches of a long pipe exceed the clearance limits. To create a more efficient piping system and save time, pipe spool prefabrication was used. Because welding of the system would have taken more time if the system had not produced prefabricated elements, welders would have had to move to the main pipe to complete the assembly or welding.

They are usually susceptible to corrosion due to the elements they are exposed to; water and natural electrolytes. Acceptable protection monitoring is necessary when applying pipeline spool systems. Pipe spool fabrication is very important as the construction of ships and other marine industries require dense pipework. Pipeline spools create a huge advantage because they reduce space constraints on site. With this advantage, all industries that use piping have a great opportunity to increase the efficiency of piping systems and reduce the need for labour and time.

Pipeline spool systems are primarily used in power plants and refineries that require dense piping. These systems include the transport and conveyance of fluids and gases, and these transport systems require a large number of connecting components. In these systems, there is no room for error. The assembly and fabrication of pipework must be completed correctly.
There are two main stages in this piping application;

  1. Pipe core production
  2. Field installation

Pipe spools are produced using raw pipe and fittings. The cutting process of the raw pipe is carried out to pre-specified dimensions which are applied to the fittings and other components.
